North 2

This week, Cornell hosted the North 2 regatta at our muddy (albeit beautiful) construction site of a sailing center. With the help of some boot washing buckets and live score updating from the water, the regatta went smoothly. Cornell sailed into a third place finish, qualifying for the America's Trophy yet again. Scott Grandt '08 and Laura Graham '09 finished second overall in A division, and Ian Cook '10 and Allison Chase '09 finished fourth in B division. NY Maritime and Hobart William Smith took first and second place, respectively. A special thanks to Charley Cook, father of Ian '10, for driving out from Boston to be our PRO, as well as Andrew Davis '01, Jon Rupp '00, and Dr. Sullivan for helping out both on and off the water.

A view from across the street...

By popular demand, a picture of the construction site from across the street. Despite a few trees in the foreground, this view should help people to see where the building will be situated on the property. For more pictures of construction click over to the pictures section.

Pre-Season Updates: Snow, Construction, and Team Racing

While the most recent winter storm dropped a foot of snow on Ithaca, the pace of construction has not let up. Most of the prep work for utilities has been completed and drainage systems are being worked on. The outline of the buildings footprint is visible since a trench has been dug and a foundation is ready to be poured. Sailboats have been replaced with Bobcat's and backhoes, but enough of the site is untouched that we will still be able to run our spring regatta. The season officially kicks off for the team next week. Six sailors will travel to Washington College for the Tom Noble Team Race. The event will provide the team with its first opportunity to hit the water this year.

Cornell Sailors Elected to Leadership Roles at Annual MAISA Meeting

This past weekend, two Cornell sailors were elected to the MAISA Executive Committee. Leigha Kemmett '10 was chosen to be the MAISA Undergraduate President. Allison Chase '09, the outgoing MAISA Undergraduate President, was elected as a North Region Representative. This will mark the third consecutive year that a Cornell student has served as the Undergraduate President. Congratulations and best luck working with the committee. Thanks should also be extended to Andrew Davis '02, who served the last five years as North Regional Director, and Scott Grandt'08 who spent the last two years serving as Undergraduate President and then North Rep.

Sailors Skate to 3-3 Tie

While the lake is still frozen over, the team has found many ways to continue to stay busy. One of them is our intramural ice hockey team. While perhaps not the best sport to cross train in, since our team boasts many people from Florida and California, we were able to skate to a 3-3 tie against a team made up of mostly hotellies. The team was anchored by Dave "the brick wall" Railsback '08 in goal, who made some incredible saves, including one which involved tackling the opponent with the puck while simultaneously throwing his stick past the blue line.

A win next week will clinch our spot in the play offs. Thanks to Cecelia Walker '10 for the picture.
